Introduction

Dan Murgatroyd died on the 30th of April 1918, aged 32.

Son of Mary E. Toyne (formerly Murgatroyd), of II Carlisle St., Gainsborough, and the late C. H. J. Murgatroyd.

The Memorial in St. Andrews Church, Burton Stather lists Dan Murgatroyd as Lincoln Yeomanry. Information on this is that The 1/1st Lincolnshire Yeomanry on 7th April 1918 : left brigade and formed 'D' Battalion Machine Gun Corps with 1/1st East Riding Yeomanry. With only one other D Mugatroyd listed with CWGC (Duke of Wellington's - West Riding Regiment) with no connection to Lincolnshire Yeomanry. I believe we have the correct details.

1891 finds the 4 year old Dan living with his mother Mary Ellen Murgatroyd at the home of his Grandparents in Hull. His Grandfather William Daly a Gangsman on the docks and his Grandmother Anne a Dressmaker. His siblings were Mabel, James W and Alfreda.

By 1901 we find Dan Murgatroyd living in Burton Stather with his mother, Mary E and step father David Jenkinson, a Civil Engineer/Fitter. Dan is aged 14 and working as a Telegraph Messenger. Sister Mabel by that time married to John T Whitehouse.

Judging by the occupations of the near neighbours it would seem that the family were living close to the site of the old Wray's Shipyard which was now being used as an Iron and Brass Foundry run by William Escreet a Marine Engineer specialising in making engines and boilers.

Dan enlisted in Lincoln initially as we thought into the Lincolnshire Regiment, his place of residence listed as Crosby.

Although not on the plaque Dan is also commemorated in the Morton St Paul's Book of Remembrance. Here is the extract from Morton Roll of Honour produced by Millfield School and provided to us by Charles Anderson.
