The 7th of June History Calendar

On this day 74 years ago in 1944, Flying Officer Gordon Smith of the RAF Voluntary Reserve, crashed Miles Martinet MS870 on the hillside to the north of Burton Stather. Sally Robinson remembers the crash in her interview.
On this day 123 years ago in 1895, the Stather built smack Beatrice Mabel
(GY117) went to the assistance of storm damaged schooner Micheal
80 miles off Spurn.
The ship at that time had only 4 of her 7 crew left, exhausted by continued pumping.
Closer to the Humber the schooner was towed by the ST Ris
but the rope parted and she sunk near the bull lightship.
Only the mate survived, being picked up by a pilot steamer.
