On this day 149 years ago in 1871, William Wray died at Burton Stather aged 41 after suffering a stroke. William was the son of John Wray and took over management of the shipyard when his father retired in 1853. Having acquired a good knowledge of the principles of shipbuilding, he introduced improvements in the lines of the ships built at Burton Stather. In 1866 he became a member of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers. After his death Geroge Morfin took over management of the shipyard.
