On this day 44 years ago in 1974, the region was struck by a huge explosion when the Nypro Chemical Plant at Flixborough blew up. Twenty eight people lost their lives in the disaster and thirty six were seriously injured out of the seventy two people working there that day. Had this happened on a weekday, there would have been many more people on the plant. There was extensive damage to properties surrounding Flixborough which extended to several miles of the site.
