On this day 107 years ago in 1917 the Stather built schooner Harriet Williams
, originaly a brigantine, was sunk by a German U-boat.
UB-18 captured and scuttled the ship in the English Channel, the crew's lives were spared.
On this day 123 years ago in 1901 a 43 foot whale was captured in the River Trent at Burton. It was caught by sailor Richard Williamson of Goole with the help of some farmers. It was killed by shooting, chopping and stuffing its blow hole.
On this day 156 years ago in 1868 John Wray & Son, ship builders at the Stather, were adjudged bankrupt following the bitter legal dispute with James Fisher of Barrow over the barque Lizzy
